Switching providers and data export

Only the German version of this text is legally binding. Translations are provided for information only. Go to the German version

This page contains the information pursuant to Art. 26 and Art. 28 of Regulation (EU) 2023/2854 (“Data Act”). The contractual rules for export, switching providers and deletion can be found in § 9 of our Terms.

Back up your data yourself

Each box is a virtual Linux machine with root access. You copy the contents of your boxes yourself, at any time during the term of the contract, for example with rsync, scp, tar or git, without asking us. The data traffic for this is included in the package. We do not provide an image of the entire box for download.

How switching works

  1. You terminate with effect from the end of the current billing month in the customer account or by e-mail (§ 15 of our Terms).
  2. Your boxes continue to run unchanged until your last contract day. If you need more time after that, request a retrieval period by e-mail by your last contract day: your boxes then remain reachable for 30 days longer, and we charge one monthly package fee for this. On request, we also extend the contract by a transitional period of up to 30 days, which you can extend once; for this period, we charge the package fee pro rata on a daily basis.
  3. On request, we send you your account data, contracts and invoices as an export.
  4. After the end of the contract, or after the end of a retrieval period, your boxes are kept locked for a further 14 days; after that we irrevocably delete them. Backups are deleted at the latest three weeks after they were created.

Switching and export are free of charge, including the data traffic; we only charge for a transitional period and a retrieval period if you request them. There are no fees for early termination. If you have any questions about your exit strategy, we will help you at support@euhost.com.

Data formats and standards

  • Contents of a box: the files in the box’s Linux file system, in the formats that you and your programs use. You transfer them via SSH using standard tools such as rsync, scp, tar or git.
  • Details of the boxes, SSH keys, customer, contract, order, payment and invoice data: a ZIP archive with JSON files (UTF-8, RFC 8259), and the invoices as PDF.
  • Domains: transfer to another provider with the auth code according to the procedure of the respective registry (§ 12 of our Terms).

Known limitations

  • We do not provide an image of a box’s disk; you transfer the contents yourself.
  • Databases and running programs are best backed up with their own tools, such as pg_dump, so that the state is consistent.
  • Our backups are not part of the export; they serve solely for restoration after disruptions.
  • The IP addresses and technical host names of the boxes belong to us and cannot be taken with you. You point your own domains to the new addresses at the new provider.

Jurisdiction and protection against access from third countries

euhost.com is a sole proprietorship based in Ebersberg, Germany, and is subject to German law and the law of the European Union. The servers on which your boxes and their backups run are located exclusively in data centres in Germany; the operator of the data centres is also based in Germany.

To prevent authorities outside the EU from unlawfully accessing your data, the following applies:

  • We store the contents of your boxes only in data centres in Germany, including the backups. The backups are encrypted; only we hold the key.
  • We only access the contents of your boxes insofar as this is necessary to remedy faults, to prevent misuse or on the basis of a legal obligation, or if you consent (§ 17 of our Terms).
  • We only comply with requests from authorities or courts of a state outside the EU if they are based on an international agreement such as a mutual legal assistance treaty or if EU and German law otherwise permit the disclosure (Art. 32 Data Act). In that case, we only disclose the minimum amount of data permissible and inform you beforehand, unless the request serves criminal prosecution and informing you would jeopardise it.

You use AI services such as Claude or ChatGPT with your own account with the respective provider (§ 4(5) of our Terms). What you yourself send from your boxes to such services lies outside our service and these commitments.
